Our Universe – Introduction (EVS)
The students of Grade II were introduced to the chapter Our Universe in class. Students learned that the universe has the Sun, Moon, stars, and planets. They learned that the Sun gives us light and heat, the Moon changes its shape, and there are eight planets that move around the Sun. They also discussed rotation (Earth spinning, causing day and night) and revolution (Earth moving around the Sun, causing seasons). To explain rotation and revolution, a hands-on activity was done using a torch and a globe. With this, children saw how the Earth spins to make day and night and how it moves around the Sun to make seasons. Students were able to clearly observe and explain day–night and seasons through the activity. They also learned about the different phases of the Moon and did an interesting pasting activity using cut-out Moon shapes.
They could identify and sequence the basic phases of the Moon.
At the end of the lesson students gained a simple and clear understanding of our universe and showed great enthusiasm while exploring the sun, moon, and earth through hands-on activities.
