Hands-On Lab Thrills: Grade VIII Young Chemists Uncover Elements, Compounds & Mixtures!
Science turned into pure excitement for our Grade VIII students during an action-packed lab session for their chemistry chapter, Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures! Through real-world experiments, our young researchers discovered how physical mixtures differ from chemical compounds.
Here are the exciting experiments the students conducted and observed:
Physical Mixture vs. Chemical Compound : Students first mixed iron filings and sulfur powder, observing that a physical mixture retains individual properties — the iron was easily pulled out using a magnet! But when heated together, iron and sulfur underwent a chemical reaction to form iron sulfide (FeS), a brand-new compound. They verified the reaction by testing it with dilute hydrochloric acid, which released gas with a characteristic rotten egg smell!
Electrolysis of Water : To see how hydrogen and oxygen chemically combine in water, students performed electrolysis. Passing an electric current through water releases hydrogen and oxygen gas bubbles at the electrodes, giving a clear visual demo of decomposing a chemical compound back into its constituent elements!
Hands-on experiments like these make abstract chemical concepts crystal clear and unforgettable!
