Hands-On Science Lab: Grade VI Students Master Separation of Substances!

SCHOOL CAMPUS — Learning science became an engaging, experiential journey for our grade VI students! As part of their science chapter, Separation of Substances, the young learners actively participated in a series of lab experiments to explore how different components of a mixture can be separated using varied scientific techniques.

Here are the key concepts and separation methods the students explored through their hands-on activities:

Evaporation & Condensation : Students observed liquid water turning into vapor upon heating and condensing back into liquid drops on a cold surface. They linked these dual processes to the natural water cycle and to recovering dissolved solids like salt from water.

Separation of Soluble Solids : By evaporating the liquid solvent, students recovered dissolved substances from a solution, seeing firsthand how salt pans work near coastal areas.

Filtration of Insoluble Solids : Using filter paper fitted in a funnel, students successfully separated insoluble impurities like sand and chalk powder from water.

Magnetic Separation : Using bar magnets wrapped in paper, students easily pulled out iron filings from a dry mixture of sand and iron, demonstrating magnetic attraction in real time.

Distillation : The young scientists observed distillation, a process combining evaporation followed by condensation to obtain pure liquid from a solution.

Through these practical activities, students gained a clear understanding of physical properties such as solubility, magnetism, and boiling points, discovering how scientists separate and purify everyday materials!
